Four Straight Wins After a Nürburgring Double
After the double win and pole position at Assen, Twan Smits showed once again that he's in career-best form. At the Nürburgring he took pole position and two convincing race wins, stretching his run to four victories in a row in the EURO MOTO Superbike championship.
Coming off the strong weekend at TT Circuit Assen, the team arrived at the Nürburgring with confidence. Smits was fast from the first session, setting the only lap in the 1:23 bracket in first free practice — more than three tenths clear of second place.
In qualifying he broke into the 1:22s with a 1'22.936, taking pole position. In race one he controlled the pace from the opening lap despite pressure from Marcel Schrötter, for his third win in a row. Race two was more comfortable: Smits built an early lead and held it to the flag for his fourth consecutive victory.
The result moves him to 178 points and third in the championship. He trails the leader by 56.5 points but sits just 22 points off second, with a 22-point cushion over fourth.
"I didn't dare dream of this," Smits said. "We were strong from the start, with pole position and two dominant wins. The team earned this."
